At the Illustrated Artist Trading Card site I took the challenge to paint a complete deck of cards. This project is unusual in the trading site because the cards are to be kept and not traded with the other painters, therefore, I am at liberty to do something that might not appeal to someone else - like portraits of people who are significant to me. So I chose to do oil portraits of family, friends, and others who have had an impact on my life and surround them with a border of Haiku (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables). I had the subject draw a card (poker size) from the deck and that's the card I chose to paint them on. If they were unavailable I drew for them. Will be posting them as I am able.

David Darrow is "Dave the Painting Guy" and during his birthday show generously shared his resource photograph with his viewers to allow them to paint his portrait while he worked on his self portrait.

As usual, my photography of the painting could use improvement, however, this is a photo of my painting.

Dave paints on u-stream, usually portraits, and he invites one and all into his studio to chat and paint with him. I highly recommend him and his show.

It was an intense and valuable weekend and all of the participants, beginners to advanced, enjoyed themselves while learning.

Lindsey Bergquest and I participated this summer in the First Annual Street Painting in Elmira, NY. It was a new venture for us since neither of us had any experience with street painting and didn't quite know what to expect. The pastels were provided and I'm hoping to convince her to "play" again this year.

We tried to make the perspective of the design so that if you stood at a certain point the mime would look like it is really sitting on the ball in the street. Unfortunately it rained the second day and washed it all away before we could complete it.

The challenge for this painting was to put a human form inside the clothing that is too fragile to wear. I chose this dress to paint because I liked the black and white with the tiny touch of brilliant green in the brooch.

This is a commission for the 1848 Clothier Exhibit in Seneca Falls, NY - "The Birthplace of Women's Rights"

The challenge was to put the little girl in the dress that is too fragile to be worn. I had a little girl model a different dress with similar style in order to get the carriage pleats to have the correct folds and lighting.

The actual cotton dress can be seen at the Seneca Falls Historical Society.

When I visited Donna, she was glowing with an energy that was indescribable. I could feel her joy and peace with her love of God. I wanted to stay in her presence and feel that joy. When I left I couldn't get her out of my mind and I knew I needed to paint her. I asked for a photo shoot and she agreed. Paint can't capture God's love, energy and peace that emanate from her while she waiting for God to scoop her up to be with Him.

This still life was a spontaneous set-up. When I was asked why in the world I would put these things together I looked up the symbolism of the objects to see how I could justify putting them together. "Because I like it" isn't a satisfactory answer soooo...since , like Waldo Emerson said; "I believe that our human life is a journey from birth to death, expanding ever outward into larger understandings of the world and our place in it , until we no longer need our shells as our spirit unwinds from the body into the ocean of reality." I'll explain my symbols according to myths

the spiral sea shell symbolizes the circlings of the soul, which eventually return to the center or truth.
The poppy is a symbol of sleep unto death and the bright scarlet color signifies the promise of resurrection after death.

The string of beads is for the thread of life that tie all things together.
The Buddha head is the seat of the enlightened life force within us.

In order to paint this landscape I used multiple photographs as resource material, as well as my memory of the beautiful sunset I experienced while visiting Lincoln, MI. I find that when you experience a place first hand and you paint it... it becomes more than just a copy of a photograph, you can put yourself in it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that a black and white photo of my painting of Jethro Wood was in the Sunday Citizen, Auburn, NY 6/1/08. The image was included in an article, "Man behind the plow" by Mary Lou Charles. This oil painting was commissioned by WE Morrison, Inc. several years ago.

When I set up this still life it seemed like the peppers were laughing and one pepper fell over laughing. The egg plant seemed to be the "straight guy" .

My daughter has been "into" skulls lately. I don't understand HER fascination because she's a 30 year old hairstylist with two young children. As a painter, however, when I saw this skull in a friend's studio I actually looked until I was captured by it too. It makes me wonder who it was and realize that life is too too short.

The shadow play on the table and background was interesting to me. I not only had lights on both sides of the subject, but gravity was at work on the thick whitish liquid and not at work on the cup. I thought the viewers could decide on what the liquid is... got milkshake?

I painted this by using only 4 mixed colors to keep it simple and a challenge since I like to "niggle" and all the beautiful colors can get muddy. I mixed up a background color, pear color in light, pear color in the middle (shadow), and foreground color and carefully placed those colors throughout the composition.
